Guide

How much life insurance do you need?

One tool and the thinking inside it: years you'd work, bills you carry, what schooling will cost, and what you've banked or carry through the job.

The most straightforward method is to add what your paycheck supports and subtract current protections. It won't be perfect, and it doesn't have to be: you choose in chunks, and the aim is enough to keep the household going when it counts.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Calculator approach: income × years + debts + schooling − savings and group plans, rounded up to the nearest $5,000. It's a beginning, never guidance.

Why those inputs

From ten to twenty is what advisors typically count; your perfect fit hinges on how long your dependents would rely on support. In the Montclair area, families raising younger children often settle on the higher end since childcare, housing, and education get pricey at the very same time.

What you owe. The house loan is usually the biggest. Insurance proceeds that settle that loan give survivors a choice rather than necessity.

Schooling. A loose guess per child in today's cash. It's quicker to build it in than to buy another policy after.

What's in your corner. Bank accounts, and whatever the company gives you through your workplace. Most group plans go away when you move on, so many count just a fraction.

Once you know your number, the quote tool will show you the expense for each insurer across 10 to 30 year spans. It's common to go higher than your estimate at younger ages when monthly cost is still manageable.
